Moonlight and Missing Media

“You ain’t got to love me, but you gonna know that I love you.”

Hey there, Cinemaniacs! Ealan here with another HMC Newsletter! And Happy Friday!

This week we will be discussing Moonlight, the 2016 drama starring Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, and Trevante Rhodes.

Do you remember one of the biggest goofs in Academy Award history in 2017? It was first announced that La La Land had won for Best Picture, when it was in fact Moonlight. Whoops! I personally remember seeing that happen in real time, and was very confused, as was the audience!

I have not personally seen Moonlight, so I am thrilled to watch it with fresh eyes! And speaking of eyes – just while combing through the quotes to include in this newsletter above – I feel like I’m going to need some tissues for this one. I bet it’s gonna be a real tear-jerker! 🥺

So please join us this Tuesday August 11th at 12PM PDT/3PM EDT to catch the live stream! Or watch it on-demand, or listen to it the following day on your favorite pod catcher!

And before I move on, a big thank you to those downloading the audio podcast! It’s still a bit surreal to know that there are those of you out there deciding to listen to us at all, so thank you once again. 😊

Streaming vs Discs

Just real quick I wanted to relay a conversation I had with my oldest sister. She mentioned she could’ve sworn she had Disney’s Wall-E on DVD, but couldn’t find it for the life of her, and really wanted to watch it (which I applaud her for, preferring the physical copy first). 👏

So she caved and ended up watching it on Disney Plus.

She then texted me and asked if there is a difference between streaming audio and audio on a disc, because she thought she was going insane with Wall-E suddenly sounding flat compared to the DVD. HA! You mean the thing that I’ve been trying to spread to the masses for years on my YouTube channel?! 😁

Needless to say, I said there is definitely a difference, and that she was not going crazy. Sure, it can also be the speed of your internet, among a few others factors, but in the end, physical media will always outperform its streaming counterpart…even good ol’ fashioned DVDs, if you can believe it. Maybe not the picture quality, but the sound?! Hell yeah! 😊

But what happened next I’m sure many of you have experienced:

I told her that I owned Wall-E on Blu-ray which I could then send to her, only because I now also own the 4K UHD Criterion version of Wall-E. So as I’m searching through the various bins that contain my movie collection (I know, I know…it’s high time I get some proper shelving to display my movie collection for easy access), I couldn’t find Wall-E on Blu-ray! I found the Criterion version, but no Blu-ray copy?!

But then it dawned on me – I never found Disney’s The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2 on 4K UHD, which I know for a fact that I own. So they must be in some random bin or container or box somewhere in the garage, hiding from me. And I bet if I find The Incredibles, there’s a big chance that Wall-E will be chillin’ with them. 🤣

But what’s with copies of Wall-E going missing? First my sister and her DVD copy, and now my and my Blu-ray copy? It’s a conspiracy!

Has that ever happened to you? You are 100% sure you own a movie, but can’t find it? As if it sprouted legs and decided to embark on a journey to “find itself” and its purpose on this Earth? 😄 Which movie was it?

That’s it for this week, Cinemaniacs! Physical media is still superior to streaming! Go see a movie this weekend like The Odyssey or the new Spider-Man movie. And don’t just watch TV and movies, experience them! See ya!
