“So if I’m not *black* enough and if I’m not *white* enough, and not *man* enough, then tell me, Tony, what am I?”
After being stunned by the performance of Mahershala Ali and company in Moonlight, Derek and I decided to tackle yet another of Ali’s films Green Book. It’s a movie I had never seen before, so Derek was excited to a) see it again, and b) hear my thoughts after having seen it for the first time!
But it never hurts to watch a film that also stars Viggo Mortensen either, being the one true king in Lord of the Rings, and all that jazz. 😄
So do your homework, watch Green Book, and join us this upcoming Tuesday August 18th at 12PM PDT/3PM EDT for a great discussion which was “inspired by a true story,” as it states at the start of the film. See you there!
Recent Physical Media Pickups
With the office shed that I’m working on eventually having a 3D-capable projector, I’ve started slowly acquiring more 3D titles. And since James Cameron seems to be the King of the 3D format, I recently picked up a couple of his most notable 3D conversions.
Obviously when you hear the name James Cameron and 3D in the same sentence, you immediately think of the Avatar franchise, and how ground-breaking it was not only for CGI and motion capture performances, but also that they were made specifically with 3D in mind.
I do happen to own the second installment – Avatar: The Way of Water – on 3D Blu-ray, but I will eventually own the whole trilogy in 3D as well. But they ain’t cheap, so yeah…😄
But I just recently introduced by daughters to Terminator 2: Judgement Day after they saw Linda Hamilton in Stranger Things Season 5, so my mind was still clearly on that kick, wanting to own one of my all-time favorite action movies in the 3D format. 😊
But here’s the thing…I also happened to pick up an older copy of Terminator 2 on standard Blu-ray (not pictured), since the most recent Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray copies apparently suffer from a lot of DNR (Digital Noise Reduction), making certain shots look like the actors are wax figures.
I’ll write a more in-depth article (or perhaps a video?) on why DNR is actually good when it comes to a 3D presentation, but just looks awful on 2D Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray. But for now, I know it seems odd that I bought an additional 2D Blu-ray version of Terminator 2 when clearly the 3D Blu-ray also comes with a 2D copy. But maybe – just maybe – I might do a comparison between the two versions to see if the DNR is in fact really bad or not. 😉 Stay tuned…?
But I’m stoked to own a 3D copy of Titanic as well. I’ve had the 4K copy for awhile now, but again, this is James Cameron, and he does 3D so well, which makes me excited to finally sit down and see another epic film of his in that format.
And lastly, I picked up Roma from director Alfonso Cuaron! Me being the audio nerd that I am, I’ve heard only amazing things about the Dolby Atmos soundtrack in this one.
After his painstaking dedication to such a new immersive audio format when he directed Gravity with Sandra Bullock, Roma was his very next project, which I’ve read is yet another instance where Cuaron wanted to take advantage of everything Dolby Atmos could achieve. So once this mini office shed is complete, you better believe Roma is going to be high up on the list of titles that I’ll be watching to break in that new theater.
Fun Fact: The Criterion Collection version of Roma is in black & white, is only sold as standard Blu-ray (not 4K UHD), but still retains its Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Cuaron himself has officially signed off on it, which is yet another reason I am very excited to finally see it properly with speakers all around me.
So…what are some recent physical media pickups you’ve gotten? We’d love to know!
That does it for this week’s Hidden Movie Club newsletter, Cinemaniacs! See you next Tuesday, my friends!
