More Soderbergh, Please…

WTF, Sony?!

Some of you may have seen the news that’s spreading like wildfire regarding Sony’s decision to go full digital with video games as of January 2028, and people are not staying silent on this decision.

Even celebrities like Trevor Noah weighed in, stating that physical media – especially concerning video games – is a means to not only own a copy outright, but such an easier way to friends to borrow and discover new and beloved games, or perhaps pass down a collection to future generations.

But what’s the benefit of going fully digital to you, the consumer? Apparently there is none.

Without any physical copies, and allowing gamers to exclusively download their titles, Sony would in theory be saving loads of cash, no longer having to worry about packaging, printing, logistics, etc.

So why will the games still be $70 or higher, you ask? Well, no one seems to have an answer for that, including Sony. The backlash is 100% warranted, since it clearly seems like a blatant, greedy move on Sony’s part to create larger profit margins for their quarterly statements.

And the worst part is, if all games are digital, technically no one owns a single title. Sony has the right to remove any title at any time. Or perhaps remove the license to be able to play it on your console. You may have a game downloaded to your PlayStation’s internal hard drive, but if the license to play it is tied to the PlayStation Store, and they remove that license for any reason? That authentication is dead, and now you own a useless collection of gigabytes taking up room on your hard drive.

Recently, Sony has also removed 500 movie titles from their digital library, so if anyone had purchased a digital copy of one or more of those 500 titles over the years – *poof – gone. Just like that, without warning. So again…WTF, Sony?!

People said I was weird knowing I still collected movies that I love on physical media. But can you see why I find it important to this day? While I love the superior video and audio quality that a 4K Blu-ray provides, it’s still so much more than that to collect the titles that I find nearest and dearest to my heart. They’re mine, and no one can take them away from me. 💪

“That’s all you got, lady. Two wrong feet in fucking ugly shoes.”

Having discussed Ocean’s Eleven earlier this week, Derek and I have decided to choose another banger from Steven Soderbergh. And that is none other than Erin Brockovich, the sassy, no-filter, hard-nosed woman who found her way into defending a whole town against a corporation trying to silence a community from the ground water contamination happening quite literally right under their feet.

Though it’s been awhile, I remember thoroughly enjoying this film. Julia Roberts even walked away winning the Best Actress Academy Award for her portrayal of the tenacious Erin Brockovich. And I’m most excited about the fact that Derek has never seen it! I’m bubbling with anticipation, wanting to know what he thinks. 😎

So come join us this upcoming Tuesday at 12PM PDT/3PM EDT for our Double Take live stream! See you there!

And there you have it, Cinemaniacs! Hang onto your physical media, in all its shapes and forms! ♥️ And Happy 4th of July weekend to those who celebrate! 🎉
