“The rules of hair care are simple and finite. Any Cosmo girl would have known.”
OMG, fellow Cinemaniacs! Ealan here with another HMC Newsletter!
Legally Blonde made its way to movie theaters this past week, and we want to talk about it!
Did you end up seeing it at your local theater? I sure did! I saw it with my whole family, in fact, which was a treat, lemme tell ya. Even my girls (9 and 11 yrs old) got a kick out of it! Legally Blonde definitely doesn’t have the breakneck pace that modern movies have, but they still enjoyed it, nonetheless!
It really is a heartwarming and charming film, with Reese Witherspoon and Luke Wilson having great chemistry whenever they’re in the same scene together. We’ll talk more about it on the stream, but this was one that I honestly didn’t think I’d enjoy this much. 😊
*DIFFERENT TIME!!!
And just a heads up – for this week only – HMC: After the Credits will be at 12PM PDT/3PM EDT instead of the usual 4PM PDT/7PM EDT. Derek has a thing he needs to attend at our usual time, so we’re having it early, baby! 12PM PDT is when Derek and I normally do Double Take, so hopefully it isn’t too much of a burden on those who would like to tune in. 🤞
So set your watches and calendar reminders for 12PM PDT later today! See you there!
IDIOCRACY
“The #1 movie in America was called ‘Ass.’ And that’s all it was for 90 minutes. It won eight Oscars that year, including best screenplay.”
Speaking of Luke Wilson – and also because of the state of these here United States – we wanted to revisit the hilarious, yet prophetic Idiocracy (2006) from writer/director Mike Judge (Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill, Office Space, Silicon Valley).
Why did we pick this movie in particular? Well, for starters, this image here that’s been circulating around social media lately sure captures the same vibe:
So Derek and I are so much looking forward to another screening of this 2006 comedy, but are also equally terrified that it will hit a little too close to home in 2026…😬
That episode of Double Take will be streaming live on Tuesday June 9th at 12PM PDT/3PM EDT, as usual.
It is not currently streaming anywhere for free, so you’ll need to rent it or purchase a physical copy if you want to see it before June 9th.
NEW CONTENT? 🤔
And speaking of renting digitally, I’ve been kicking around an idea that I want your feedback on, to gauge any interest in this type of content.
From now on – unless it’s a title I happen to already own on physical media – I was thinking of renting the titles we end up watching for Hidden Movie Club streams (if it’s not streaming for free somewhere). Then the following Friday, post a follow-up video called “Shelf Worthy?” where I go over the physical media release and see if it’s a good idea to own on disc.
Since it would be a title I don’t yet have my hands on, I would take a gander at online sources about packaging, artwork, perhaps if there are collector’s editions versus standard 4K Blu-ray or HD Blu-ray copies, steelbook versions, which bonus features it has like commentaries and BTS documentaries, native 4K transfer or upscaled, audio mixes, and price & availability.
Maybe it’s a live stream, where those tuning in can weigh in on if it’s a solid physical media purchase, or if it’s not shelf worthy? Or maybe it’s a nicely polished pre-recorded video that I post on YouTube? Or maybe only available to those on the $5 pledge tier here on SubStack? 🤷♂️
And if I do decide it’s shelf worthy, once I have it in hand, I would do a quick follow-up unboxing video?
What say ye, fellow Cinemaniacs? Would that be of interest to you, being able to weigh in during a live stream, or being able to share your thoughts via comments on why it is or isn’t shelf worthy? Let us know! We want to have those who decide to join the $5/month pledge tier something to look forward to, and participate in! 🎉
And that’s about it, Cinemaniacs! Join us for Legally Blonde today and get yourself ready for next week’s discussion on Idiocracy!
And of course, don’t just watch TV and movies, experience them, especially with friends and family at a theater.
