Hey Cinemaniacs! Ealan here with yet another HMC Newsletter!
“Somebody in this camp ain’t what he appears to be. Right now that may be one or two of us. By spring, it could be all of us.”
To continue with some John Carpenter classics, we’re watching The Thing for Double Take! Did you already watch it for your homework? Do you own it? Did you listen to the audio commentary with John Carpenter and Kurt Russell like I did (and most likely Derek as well)?! 😄
Please tune in today at 12PM PDT/3PM EDT as Derek and I discuss what we found out by listening to the commentary, as well as breaking down our thoughts on the movie as a whole. Some incredible special effects, by the way. Holy cow. So please tune in live if you can, or watch or listen on-demand afterwards if you love cinema as much as we do!
Innerspace
After watching They Live and The Thing, we wanted to stay in the 80s for the next couple of weeks. And we couldn’t be more excited!
We’re gonna kick off the next official HMC: After Credits with all three of us by discussing the 1987 Steven Spielberg produced film Innerspace starring Dennis Quad, Martin Short and Meg Ryan.
I gotta be honest, I haven’t seen this probably since the early 90s when it was on TV or something? I don’t remember much apart from the scene in which Dennis Quad’s character’s realizes he and his little ship is inside Meg Ryan’s body and blasts some loud music so she can hear it. Other than that? 🤷♂️ So I’m stoked to…see it for the first time, technically? 😂
So set your schedules, calendars, watches, etc for May 19th at 4PM PDT/7PM EDT for that discussion. Thanks to Brad for suggesting this one.
*Batteries Not Included
And to prepare you even more for what’s coming up in May, we’re going to continue with yet another Steven Spielberg produced, Industrial Light & Magic-led visual effects 80s classic *Batteries Not Included.
Did you know Innerspace and *Batteries Not Included both came out in 1987? I just found that out as I was searching on imdb.com. 😂
I have such a soft spot for this era of Hollywood where it seemed like Spielberg and Lucas were dominating the landscape with the films they were both directing and producing. Some light-hearted, family-friendly, interesting little concepts that came to the big screen.
I can’t help but feel nostalgic for these times because ideas like this even made it to the cinema. Nowadays, Innerspace and *Batteries Not Included would for sure never get green lit, or at the very most go direct to streaming.
So I’m stoked to see if these little family films hold up after all these years! Seeing John Carpenter and Coen Bros films are one thing, but it’s high time we get to some films that the legendary Steven Spielberg was involved in early in his career.
And there you have it, Cinemaniacs! Tune in, share on social media and by word-of-mouth, subscribe on your favorite podcatcher, and let’s continue this Hidden Movie Club vibe sesh! 😎
As always, don’t just watch TV and movies, experience them. Preferably in a theater with friends or family! Woot!
