Sup, Cinemaniacs! Ealan here with another HMC Newsletter! I hope you’re all doing well after yet another “Spring forward” Daylight Savings moment has come. 😴 Losing that hour is just the worst, is it not? Time to abolish such an outdated system, am I right? Let’s all be jealous of (and simultaneously scowl at) Derek who lives in Arizona where they got rid of Daylight Savings quite a long time ago. Must be nice…😂
“So, that was Mrs. Lundegaard on the floor in there. And I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper. And those three people in Brainerd. And for what? For a little bit of money? There’s more to life than a little money, you know. Don’tcha know that? And here ya are, and it’s a beautiful day. Well. I just don’t understand it.”
Join us today at 4PM PDT/7PM EDT for our discussion revolving around Fargo, the 90s classic Coen Brothers film about some “regulars” that get caught up in a small town fiasco when a large sum of money is found. We’re very excited to talk about it, since it takes inspiration from many other films, and seems to be a mishmash of genres that somehow work so well together. Can’t wait to see you all there!
Recommendations
I just wanted to throw out some recommendations real quick that I’ve either seen and adore, or have recently come across and have to tell you about.
First is the still frame you see above…which is from another Coen Brothers film The Hudsucker Proxy.
It seems like Paul Newman keeps popping up as of late here at HMC HQ after both Derek and I gushed about Road to Perdition, we then discussed Cool Hand Luke in our debut episode of HMC: Double Take, and now he pops up again next to the towering Tim Robbins in The Hudsucker Proxy.
IMDb summarizes that films as follows: A naive business graduate is installed as president of a manufacturing company as part of a stock scam.
But like any Coen Brothers film, it is so much more than that! The dialog is so sharp, with quick wit, hilarious physical comedy from a gangly Tim Robbins, and a charm that only the Coens can muster.
It’s currently streaming on Tubi and Kanopy, if you have accounts with those services. Both are free services, by the way. Tubi is like watching TNT on a Saturday back in the day – free to watch, with intermittent ad breaks. And Kanopy is free with any participating library card. So check your local library to see if they support Kanopy so you can be streaming some cool stuff for free! 🎉
My other recommendation is Project Hail Mary…in all its forms! It officially comes out in theaters March 20th (with some early screenings available on March 19th, so check your local theaters), and I am already stoked.
Why? Because I started listening to the audio book over the weekend while doing a bunch of yard work (since it seems Spring has come early…oof), and I’m already hooked! Very well done. Very kid-friendly, too, by the way. Okay, maybe not 5 year-old friendly, but if you have some kids maybe 8 and older? I’d make sure to secure your tickets now before all the good seats get filled.
IMDb reads: Science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth. As his memory returns, he uncovers a mission to stop a mysterious substance killing the sun, and save Earth. An unexpected friendship may be the key.
I’m not even halfway through the audio book, but I am finding myself thinking about it even when something has pulled me away from listening to it some more! And I keep hearing excellent reviews from those who have already seen the film adaptation. So I think we have another Ryan Gosling hit on our hands, my friends!
Lastly, I wanted to remind you all to secure your tickets to go see TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze right now! It comes out this weekend for a limited time for its 35th anniversary, thanks to Fathom Entertainment. We won’t be talking about it on HMC: After the Credits until March 24th, but I wanted to give you a heads up to see it theaters before it was gone. Go ninja, go ninja, go ninja, GO!
Thanks, Cinemaniacs! Don’t just watch TV and movies, experience them, preferably with friends! See you next week!
